  • PROFILE: Radio active - Andria Vidler, Managing director, Capital Radio London

If an electrical current could take human form, it would probably look like Andria Vidler. The new managing director of Capital Radio London doesn't just exude energy, she seems to create a force field that draws you in whether you like it or not.

'Andria's a real dynamo,' says Mark Lund, chief executive of Delaney Lund Knox Warren, who worked with Vidler at Still Price Lintas. 'She's a bit like a flame thrower: point her at any objective and she'll get there by a combination of force and guile.'

If this sounds ruthless, meet Vidler face to face and it's impossible to dislike her. She comes over as disarmingly straight and down to earth, determined to find the positive in most people and most situations. Even after the upheavals at the BBC, which contributed to her decision to quit, she still says Greg Dyke 'is a fantastic man and he's doing absolutely the right thing for the BBC'.

Her new role of running Capital Radio's London stations, Capital Gold, and in particular the flagship station Capital FM, is likely to require a large dose of this positive attitude. While on the face of it the two stations are in good health - Chris Tarrant's breakfast show regularly commands an audience of million - competition in the form of more targeted, dare one say it, trendier stations, is already making its mark.

In the last set of Rajars (to September 17, ), London dance station Kiss FM overtook Capital FM in the critical to year-old demographic for the first time, recording an average weekly reach of ,, compared with Capital FM's ,

Duncan Sillence, Starcom Motive's head of radio and press, says: 'Capital has always been all things to all people, but as people's listening tastes have become more sophisticated and there are targeted channels, that positioning is no longer as appealing.'

    Our ambitions

To provide more games, more players, more entertainment, more winners, and more money for National Lottery-funded projects.

Over the course of our year licence period we plan to double returns to National Lottery-funded projects.

    Our strategy

We will attract new players, and bring back those who have stopped playing, by ensuring our games, marketing and player experience feel relevant to today’s consumers and recapture the magic of The National Lottery.

We have a strong focus on modernising The National Lottery over the course of the year licence, with significant investment in technology and data to deliver better player experiences, better player protection and a more up-to-date operating platform.

Some of the changes we make will be noticed by players, but many of the changes will take place in the background, including technology and new terminals in shops to enable us to fully deliver on our plans.
