Two decades ago the movie Forrest Gump was the toast of the Oscars – winning six Academy Awards including Best Actor for Tom Hanks and Best Director for Robert Zemeckis.

But child star Michael Conner Humphreys - who played a young Forrest in leg braces - missed out on his big chance to attend the biggest showbiz event on the planet.

His parents were offered the chance to buy tickets for the most important night of their son's life but, unable to find the cash, eight-year-old Michael and his family watched the show at home on TV.

In an exclusive interview with Daily Mail Online, just days before this years Academy Awards, Michael recalls: 'I was eight when this all went down, but my parents were asked if they wanted to buy an Oscar ticket and they couldn't afford it.

'The tickets were going to cost a lot of money, so we decided to just watch it on TV like everyone else.

'At the time I wasn't sure if I wanted to go or not, but it would be a different situation now.

'I would try and go. As an eight-year-old I didn't mind, that's the perspective, I guess, of a child.

'But we did watch it at

Just as Forrest Gump famously said, “Life is like a box of chocolates — you never know what you’re gonna get.”

That’s certainly true for one former child star who appeared in the classic family film — and he’s currently being hailed as “unrecognizable” upon resurfacing years after leaving the industry.

All grown-up now, Michael Conner Humphreys, 38, played the younger version of Tom Hanks’ title character in the 1994 film “Forrest Gump.”

Humphreys was just 8 years old when he played the titular character, cast from an open call to play Forrest as a child.

However, 29 years on from participating in cinematic history, he decided the spotlight wasn’t for him — instead choosing to finish school, then enlist in the US Army, spending four years as an infantry soldier, which included an 18-month tour of duty in Iraq. 

He completed his military service in 2008.

Meanwhile, Humphreys said his parents never pushed him to pursue a career in acting, as he doesn’t think “Hollywood is a healthy lifestyle for kids,” and his family wasn’t interested in uprooting from their native Oregon to life-in-the-fast-lane Los Angeles.

“Back then, my parents just let me decide for myself what I wanted to do next, and they never pushed me to pursue other acting roles,” he told the Sun, adding he “mainly wanted to have fun and play with my friends.”

“Especially as I liked school,” he added. “Offers came in, but I really wasn’t that concerned with trying to pick up more roles after that.”

Humphreys said he enjoyed living a relatively “normal” life as a child — despite playing the title role in a film that won six Oscars and grossed $329,694,499 at the worldwide box office.

Released in 1994, Forrest Gump quicly became a staple in the Vietnam War genre. With a talented cast including Tom Hanks, Gary Sinise , Sally Field and Mykelti Williamson, the movie earned six Academy Awards at the 67th Oscars.

Michael Conner Humphreys, whose performance as young Forrest Gump left a lasting impression, took an unanticipated path after the film's success. Rather than continuing in Hollywood, Humphreys chose to serve his country by enlisting in the US Army and completing a tour overseas.

Michael Conner Humphreys was born on March 1, 1985, in the picturesque town of Independence, Mississippi. At just eight years old in 1993, he auditioned for a role that sought " a young Tom Hanks with light eyes and a quirky disposition ." The movie, as you might have guessed, was Forrest Gump .

Humphreys landed the role of young Forrest Gump, his distinctive Southern accent adding authenticity to the character. Tom Hanks even made a special effort to master the young Forrest's accent for his portrayal of the older character. Humphreys’ performance earned him a nomination at the 16th Youth in Film Awards, where he was celebrated alongside his co-stars Hanna Hall and Haley Joel Osment.

Humphreys chose not to pursue acting

Outside of high school productions; an uncredited role in the 2003 television movie, A Painted House ; the World War II -era independent film, Pathfinders: In the Company of Strangers ; and an episode of Netflix's The Movies That Made Us , Humphreys has largely stayed out of Hollywood, opting to pursue other endeavors.
