Drake first came to prominence in the teen soap Degrassi: The Next Generation in the role of Jimmy Brooks, a wheelchair-bound character he played for seven years. After leaving the show he became one of the biggest rappers on the planet after signing a deal with Lil Wayne’s label Young Money Entertainment. He is rarely out of the headlines, whether it’s for dating Rihanna or Jennifer Lopez, founding his own label, OVO Sound, or fronting the NBA’s Toronto Raptors as the team’s global ambassador. It’s no surprise that Jay-Z labeled him as the Kobe Bryant of hip-hop.

Early Life

Born Aubrey Drake Graham on October 24, 1986, in Toronto, Drake grew up with music in his blood. His father, Dennis Graham, was a drummer for the legendary rock 'n' roll star Jerry Lee Lewis. An uncle, Larry Graham, played bass for Sly and the Family Stone as well as Prince. Drake says that his mother, Sandi Graham, also hails from a "very musical" family — his grandmother babysat Aretha Franklin.

Drake comes from an eclectic and unique ethnic and religious background. His father is an African American Catholic and his mother is a white Canadian Jew. Speaking about his personal identity, Drake says: "At the end of the day, I consider myself a Black man because I'm more immersed in Black culture than any other. Being Jewish is kind of a cool twist. It makes me unique."

Drake's parents divorced when he was five years old, and he was raised by his mother in Forest Hill, an affluent and predominantly Jewish neighborhood in Toronto. He attended Jewish day school, had a Bar Mitzvah at age 13 and observed the Jewish High Holy Days with his mother. "My mom has always made Hanukkah fun," Drake recalls. "When I was younger, she gave cool gifts and she'd make latkes."

He was the character Jimmy Brooks for eight seasons on the television show Degrassi: The Next Generation (2001–2008). He is of Jewish and Black/Afro-American descent.

Drake has worked with a lot of other musicians. Drake collaborated with Rihanna on the number-one singles "What's My Name?" (2010) and "Work" (2016). He also rapped on "Moment 4 Life" (2011) by Nicki Minaj. "Moment 4 Life" was nominated for a 2012 Grammy Award in the category Best Rap Performance. His third album Take Care won the award for Best Rap Album at the 2013 Grammy Awards.

In 2012, Drake along with his producer 40 and manager Oliver El-Khatib started the OVO Soundrecord label.

On September 30, 2013, he was named as the "global ambassador" for the Toronto Raptors of the National Basketball Association (NBA). On March 14, 2019, the Raptors renamed their practice facility to the OVO Athletic Centre after Drake's brand.

In 2016, he released Views, an album that was only on iTunes at first. His single "One Dance" became his first number-one single on the US Billboard Hot 100 as a main artist.

Drake went on the 54-show Summer Sixteen Tour alongside American rapper Future to promote Views, Future's fourth studio album Evol, and the two's collaborative mixtape What a Time to Be Alive. The tour earned $84.3 million which made it the highest grossing hip-hop tour of all time.

On March 18, 2017, Drake released More Life, which he referred to as a "playlist" instead of an album. The singles "Fake Love" and "Passionfruit" reached the top ten in countries worldwide.

Drake was an actor on the teen drama television series Degrassi: The Next Generation in the early 2000s. Intent on pursuing a career in music, he left the series in 2007 after releasing his debut mixtape, Room for Improvement. He released two further independent projects, Comeback Season and So Far Gone, before signing to Lil Wayne's Young Money Entertainment in June 2009.

Drake released his debut studio album Thank Me Later in 2010, which debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 and was soon certified platinum. One of the most awarded and top-selling musical artists in history, Canadian rapper Drake has made a substantial impact on Hip Hop by expanding its musical and lyrical possibilities. 

Drake was born Aubrey Drake Graham, in Toronto, Ontario. Drake’s musician father, originally from Mempis, Tennessee, met his mother, an English teacher, at a performance in Toronto. He grew up moving between Toronto and Memphis after his parents divorced. As a child, his mother enrolled him in dance courses. He later became interested in acting while in high school, performing in various theater productions before dropping out of school after being frequently bullied due to his mixed-race background. 

At age 15, Drake auditioned for the TV series Degrassi: The Next Generation, where he played Jimmy Brooks, an athlete who became physically disabled after being shot by a classmate. While continuing to act in the series, he also pursued music, which ran in his family’s history.  Drake’s father played drums for Jerry Lee Lewis, while his uncle, Larry Graham, is a legendary musician and pioneering bassist, known for his work with Sly and the Family Stone, Prince, and his namesake group, Graham Central Station. 

In 2007, he released the mixtape Comeback Season. A single from the mixtape featuring Trey Songz, “Replacement Girl,” received national attention after being premiered on  BET’s 106 & Park program.
