The American rock band Marilyn Manson originates from Ohio. Initially known as Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids, the band was formed in 1989 and consisted of bassist Olivia Newton Bundy (real name Brian Tutunick), guitarist Daisy Berkowitz (real name Scott Putesky), and vocalist Marilyn Manson (real name Brian Warner).

Keyboardist Zsa Zsa Speck (real name Perry Pandrea) soon joined the group. Manson, drummer Gil Sharone, guitarist/keyboardist Tyler Bates (who joined in 2014), guitarist Reba Meyers, and bassist Piggy D. (who joined in 2024) form the current lineup.

To create their stage names, the band members combined the last name of serial killer Charles Manson and the first name of actress Marilyn Monroe.

Gil Sharone

American drummer Gil Sharone has played with rock groups Marilyn Manson, Team Sleep, Stolen Babies, and The Dillinger Escape Plan. Additionally, he filled in for the punk rock group +44. He is Rani Sharone's (of Stolen Babies) twin brother.

Sharone is considered one of the world's most versatile touring/session drummers owing to his work in punk rock, industrial metal, classic-styled ska, rocksteady, and reggae.

Tyler Bates

Tyler Bates is a musician, music producer, and video game, television, and movie composer from the United States. With movies like Dawn of the Dead, 300, Sucker Punch, Halloween and Halloween II, and the John Wick series, he primarily works in the action and horror film genres.

He produced the albums The Pale Emperor, Heaven Upside Down, and One Assassination Under God – Chapter 1 and serves as the lead guitarist for the American rock group Marilyn Manson. He is a member of Jerry Cantrell's studio and touring band.

History

1989–1996

Marilyn Manson and Daisy Berkowitz formed Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids in December 1989, adding Olivia Newton Bundy to complete the band's first line-up. After recording their first demo The Raw Boned Psalms the following month, the trio added keyboardist Zsa Zsa Speck (Perry Pandrea) and performed their first string of live shows, before Bundy and Speck were replaced in June 1990 by Gidget Gein (Brad Stewart) and Madonna Wayne Gacy (Stephen Bier), respectively. In August 1991, the Spooky Kids became a five-piece with the addition of their first drummer Sara Lee Lucas (Fred Streithorst), after previously using a drum machine. The group played its last show under the Spooky Kids moniker on August 1, 1992, before it was dropped on the recommendation of their label Nothing Records.

During the recording of the band's full-length debut album Portrait of an American Family, Gein received a notice while in hospital recovering from a heroin overdose that his services "were no longer needed". Marilyn Manson is an American rock band based in Los Angeles, California, in the United States. The band was formed in 1989 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida as Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids. Its uniquely theatrical performances gathered a local cult following that subsequently developed into a worldwide fan base.

Marilyn Manson's reputation has likewise grown, with the band now considered one of modern music's most widely-known and most controversial; this has been due, in large part, to eponymous lead singer Marilyn Manson — born Brian Warner — and his frequent clashes with religious and political figures. The name of each band member was originally created by combining the first name of an iconic female sex symbol and the last name of an iconic serial killer, doing so to demonstrate of the odd dichotomy of American society as a critical and, simultaneously, laudatory appraisal of America and its peculiar culture. The members of the band dress in outlandish makeup and costumes, and have engaged in intentionally shocking behavior both on stage and off. Their lyrics often receive criticism for anti-religious sentiment and references to sex, drugs and violence. Marilyn Manson's music and performances have frequently been called offensive and obscene, and, more than a few times, protests and petitions have led to the group being banned from performing.
