American photographer

David Muench (born June 25, 1936) is an American landscape and nature photographer known for portraying the American western landscape. He is the primary photographer for more than 60 books and his work appears in many magazines, posters, and private collections.

Career

Muench was born on June 25, 1936, in Santa Barbara, California. Muench has been a freelance photographer since the 1950s with his formal schooling including the Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, New York, The University of California at Santa Barbara and the Art Center School of Design, Los Angeles.

His first Arizona Highways cover was published in January 1955 at the age of 18, and he has continued to work with the magazine since then. In December 2015, to celebrate seven decades of collaboration, Arizona Highways dedicated an entire issue of the magazine to Muench, the first time they had done so for a single person.

At the recommendation of Ansel Adams, more than 200 images by Muench are archived in the collection of the Center for Creative Photography. Although he has done a few exhibits, Muench chose the coffee table book as the main vehicle for his photography. He is the author of more than 60 books.

In 1975, Muench was commissioned by the National Park Service to photograph 33 large murals on the Lewis and Clark Expedition for the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in St. Louis, Missouri, including 350 smaller photographs to accompany the murals. In 2000, Muench received the National Parks Conservation Association's Robin W. Winks Award for Enhancing Public Understanding of National Parks.

Position Overview

Northern Arizona University’s Cline Library invites applications for the 2025 Elizabeth M. and P. T. Reilly Internship. The intern will work closely with Special Collections and Archives (SCA) staff to develop a photographic exhibition showcasing images from the David Muench Photography records. The Reilly internship is an opportunity for the intern to research, curate, and design both a virtual online exhibit and a physical display which will launch in October 2025.

The David Muench Photography records, acquired by SCA in 2022, document Muench’s 70-year career in landscape photography. Muench is best known for his work in the American West, including his numerous collaborations with the National Park Service and his contributions to Arizona Highways. The David Muench Photography records encompass thousands of physical and digital images created by Muench as well as associated business records and other materials.

SCA envisions the exhibit as representing highlights from David Muench’s photographic career, including selections from his most iconic images. The intern will select 16 to 18 images from the collection highlighting the distinctive aspects of Muench’s work. They will assume primary responsibility for researching and writing content for the physical display and virtual exhibit, bearing in mind that past online exhibits are preserved for long-term online enjoyment. The intern will collaborate with SCA staff to design and prepare for the installation of the physical display in SCA’s gallery space on the second floor of Cline Library. The intern may also assist in the design of satellite exhibits in other locations.

Marc Muench (born October 14, 1966) is an American photographer who specializes in sports and landscape photography.

The passion for photography runs in the Muench family: Both his grand-father Joseph Muench and his father, David Muench, have photographed landscapes for over half a century, and his mother, Bonnie Muench, is a painter and photographer as well.

Muench was designated by Kodak in 2003 as a Kodak Photo Icon. Muench's photography has appeared on covers or inside Time, National Geographic Magazine, Traveler, Arizona Highways, Ski, Skiing, Sunset, Outside, Sierra Magazine, etc. His work also appears in books, calendars, note cards, postcards, posters and annual reports, published by Sierra Club Books.

Childhood

Marc was born on October 14 and the 17, 1966 in Santa Barbara, California to David and Bonnie Muench.

Education

Muench studied at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, graduating in the spring of 1989.

Contributions

Muench is the artist in residence at [SmugMug.com], a photography website where he runs a critique thread called the "Muench University." Muench also contributes to the National Parks Guide, published by The American Park Network, as a photo editor. Many of his photographs of the United States National Parks system are shown in the publications.

Muench has worked with such companies as Leo Burnett, IMI, Kodak, Grey Advertising, Ogilvy and Mather, McCann Erickson, Karsh and Hagan, Hakuhodo Inc., Hallmark, Time-Life, Reader's Digest, and The National Geographic on various projects.

Catalina Island

Muench spent a year creating a video project on Catalina Island. The five-minute video captures the new Trans Catalina Trail for the Catalina Island Conservancy. The video highlights the island's landscapes and wildlife, and can be viewed at th
