Jesus (c. 6 to 4 BC – AD 30 or 33), also referred to as Jesus Christ,Jesus of Nazareth, and many other names and titles, was a first-century Jewish preacher and religious leader. He is the central figure of Christianity, the world's largest religion. Most Christian denominations believe Jesus to be the incarnation of God the Son and the awaited messiah, or Christ, a descendant from the Davidic line that is prophesied in the Old Testament. Virtually all modern scholars of antiquity agree that Jesus existed historically. Accounts of Jesus's life are contained in the Gospels, especially the four canonical Gospels in the New Testament. Academic research has yielded various views on the historical reliability of the Gospels and how closely they reflect the historical Jesus.
Jesus was circumcised at eight days old, was baptized by John the Baptist as a young adult, and after 40 days and nights of fasting in the wilderness, began his own ministry. He was an itinerant teacher who interpreted the law of God with divine authority and was often referred to as "rabbi". Jesus often debated with his fellow Jews on how to best follow God, engaged in healings, taught in parables, and gathered followers, among whom twelve were appointed as his chosen apostles. He was arrested in Jerusalem and tried by the Jewish authorities, turned over to the Roman government, and crucified on the order of Pontius Pilate, the Roman prefect of Judaea. After his death, his followers became convinced that he rose from the dead, and following his ascension, the community they formed eventually became the early Christian Church that expande One Solitary Life The primary sources for the details of Jesus' life are found in the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, which were written approximately between 60 and 90 A.D. However, mention is made of Jesus' in writings outside of the gospels. Both the Roman Historian Tacitus (c.55-120), and the Jewish writer Josephus (c.37-100), mention Jesus' death by crucifixion. Further information on this, and also answers to common questions about Jesus Christ, are found on the Christianity Q and A page. Jesus Christ was born around 4 B.C. in the town of Bethlehem, a town that was also the Bi Jesus Christ was a real person who lived about 2,000 years ago. His life, death and rising from the dead are documented in the Bible books Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. These books are known as the Gospels. His final days on earth and ascension back to heaven are in the Bible book, Acts. All the gospels are based on the eye-witness testimony of the apostles, who knew Jesus extremely well. They were his 12 closest followers and spent three years on the road with him, listening to his teaching, watching him miraculously heal people and meeting with him when he was raised from the dead. There are other sources of information about Jesus too. He is mentioned in texts written by non-Christian historians from that era: Josephus, a Jewish man, Tacitus, a Roman senator, and Suetonius. Thousands of people heard Jesus teach during his lifetime and the Bible has stories of many who were healed by him. A number of others saw him die, including a Roman centurion. So there were many eyewitnesses who were able to give personal accounts to the Bible writers. But Jesus was, and is, much more than just a man. In the Bible, Jesus often refers to God as his Father. But in the Bible book, John, he goes further, suggesting the uniqueness and closeness of their relationship saying, ‘I and the Father are one…’, and ‘Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father’. Such statements of apparent blasphemy infuriated some of the Jewishl eaders who heard them. Christians believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God – but he is also God himself. Christianity teaches that God exists in three forms at the same time: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (It is rather like how water can exist as steam, water and ice – each has the same chemical formula, but looks different). An excerpt from the Bible book, Colossians, tries to capture the awesomeness of Jesus, ‘he is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation…by him, all things were created on heaven Jesus Christ, from whom Christianity gets its name, lived in the Middle East 2,000 years ago. The story of his life is documented in the Bible, in writings known as the Gospels, but he was also written about by historians of the time. The Gospel accounts focus mostly on his birth and the last three years of his life. Christians believe Jesus was God in human form, someone who came to show us who God is, how much he loves human beings and how he wants a personal relationship with each one of us. Christians believe that the death of Jesus made it possible for anyone to be forgiven for all their wrongdoings and begin a new life and new relationship with God with a clean slate. Jesus’ birth, celebrated every year at Christmas, took place around 6-4 BCE in the town of Bethlehem near Jerusalem. Berthold Werner at wikivoyage (CC BY-SA 3.0) 'This is a historical figure upon which we have a great deal of evidence for his existence and his teachings and even his rising from the dead in a literal way.' Jesus worked as a carpenter in Nazareth like his mother Mary’s husband, Joseph, until he was about 30. He then spent three years travelling the region with a group of hand-picked followers known as his disciples, teaching about God and healing sick people. In around 30 CE, Jesus was arrested, put on trial and executed by crucifixion. Three days later he rose from the dead – an event celebrated by Christians every year at Easter. After this, he appeared to hundreds of people over six weeks before rising up to heaven. Christianity teaches that he will return in the future – an event known as the Second Coming. Jesus’ teaching touched all aspects of human experience and shows God’s concern for all parts of our lives. Many Bible passages describe Jesus meeting and helping individuals, often Who was Jesus ?
H e was born in an obscure village, the son of a peasant woman.
He grew up in another village, where he worked in a carpenter's shop until he was thirty. Then for three years he became a wandering preacher.
He never wrote a book. He never held an office. He never had a family or owned a house. He didn't go to college. He never visited a big city. He never travelled two hundred miles from the place where he was born. He did none of those things one usually associates with greatness. He had no credentials but himself.
He was only thirty-three when the tide of public opinion turned against him. His friends ran away. He was turned over to his enemies and went through a mockery of a trial. He was executed by the state. While he was dying, his executioners gambled for his clothing, the only property he had on earth. When he was dead he was laid in a borrowed grave through the pity of a friend.
Twenty one centuries have come and gone, and today he is the central figure of the human race and the leader of mankind's progress. All the armies that ever marched, all the navies that ever sailed, all the parliaments that ever sat, all the kings that ever reigned, put together, have not affected the life of man on this earth as much as that One Solitary Life.
