Don Leonard Scott Jr. (born March 5, 1965) is an American lawyer, politician, veteran, and convicted but pardoned felon. A Democrat, he is a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, representing the 88th district. He was minority leader of the Virginia House of Delegates from 2022 to 2024. On January 10, 2024, he became Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates. He is the first black speaker in Virginia's history.
Early life and education
Don Scott was born on March 5, 1965 in Houston, Texas. He was raised in Houston, by a single mother of six children. Scott attended a magnet high school for aerodynamics before attending and graduating from Texas A&M University with a degree in agriculture.
Scott served as a naval officer until 1991 when he received an honorable discharge. He served on the destroyer USS John Hancock (DD-981). Following his time in the U.S. Navy, Scott obtained a JD from Louisiana State University Law School in 1994.
Career
Legal
In 2002, Scott took an entry-level position at KRA Corporation, a workforce development company. During his time at KRA, Scott relocated to Portsmouth, Virginia, and eventually became senior vice President at the firm.
In 2015, Scott was admitted to the bar and opened his own firm, where he practiced criminal defense, family law, and civil cases. In 2022, Scott joined Breit Biniazan Trial Lawyers as a partner.
Political
Scott filed to run to represent the 80th district in the 2019 Virginia House of Delegates election after the resignation of Matthew James, who was appointed by Governor Ralph Northam to an executive position. Scott was unopposed in the primaries, and in the general election defeated Republican James W. Evans and Independent Ryan Benton with 66.01% Musical artist Bishop Leonard Stephen Scott (born February 28, 1949) is an American gospel musician and pastor of Rock Community Church. He started his music career, in 1989, with Tyscot Records releasing Holy, and they have released all of his albums. Scott has released eleven albums with three of those charting on the Billboard magazineGospel Albums chart. Bishop Scott was born Leonard Stephen Scott, on February 28, 1949, in Indianapolis, Indiana, and founded the Tyscot Records label with L. Craig Tyson to facilitate the promotion of his church choir, Christ Church Apostolic Radio Choir. His music recording career started in 1989, with the release of Holy by his label Tyscot Records, and he has released all eleven of his albums with that particular label. The breakthrough release upon the Billboard magazineGospel Albums chart was Hymns for the Nation in 2004, which charted at No. 39. His album, Hymns & Church Songs Live from Alabama, was released in 2006, and it charted at No. 29. The 2008 album, Be Lifted Up, charted at No. 18. Scott approaches each task with preparation, creativity, and tenacity. As first-chair trial counsel, Scott has won significant, high-profile, multimillion dollar jury verdicts involving patent infringement, false advertising, service mark and trademark infringement, trade secret misappropriation, and breach of contract. He has also obtained attorneys’ fees and injunctions for his clients, including businesses of all sizes from Fortune 500 companies to local enterprises. Complimenting his unique background and experience, Scott's cases involve a variety of technologies such as software, food preparation methods, recreational products, mechanical devices, and pharmaceuticals. Recognizing his litigation skills, Washington University School of Law invited him to serve as an adjunct professor. In this role, Scott teaches trademark litigation to upper-level law students and LLMs. As a business advisor and registered U.S. patent attorney, Scott helps clients manage their patent portfolios during prosecution and provides strategic advice pertaining to portfolio development and enforcement. He also represents companies before the USPTO. Scott counsels entrepreneurs on how to navigate commercial contract issues related to intellectual property licensing and trade secret protection. Prior to his legal career, Scott was a registered pharmacy technician. He obtained his M.B.A. and M.H.A. and taught finance to undergraduate students at the University of Missouri.
