Chhanda dhara nikhil banerjee biography
Pt. Nikhil Banerjee was born in Calcutta on October 14th, 1931 as the 7th child to Jitendranath Banerjee and Durgarani Devi. Pt.Nikhil Banerjee’s prodigious affinity towards Sitar music was sensed by none other than his father Jitendranath Banerjee, who himself was an amateur sitarist. Jitendranath owing to his son’s dedication and deep liking for Sitar music started teaching young Nikhil. Nikhil Banerjee was also initiated into the illustrious Imdadkhani-Etawah Gharana under the tutelage of Andrew Gomez.
Nikhil Banerjee became the youngest performer on the All India Radio, at the age of nine. Instantaneously, young Nikhil secured the first position among all the contestants in all categories in the All Bengal Music Competition on October 1939. As a token of appreciation for his feat, Nikhil was given the chance to play in his first major concert in the 7th All Bengal Music Festival (4-day long festival which featured the greatest vocalists and instrumentalists of India).
Nikhil was soon recognized in the music circles as a child prodigy. Boosted by his son's talent, Jitendranath decided to take him to a proper guru. Ustad Mushtaq Ali Khan had also heard Nikhil's music being one of the judges in the All Bengal Music Competition. So Jitendranath took Nikhil to the Ustad. Nikhil's tutelage started under his first guru. Nikhil learned from Ustad Mushtaq Ali Khan for about three months. His next guru was Kumarbahadur Birendrakishore Roy Chowdhury. Kumarbahadur's forte was his extensive knowledge of Dhrupad music. During this time, Nikhil was also introduced to one of Enayat Khan's leading disciples, Jitendramohan Se

Pandit Nikhil Banerjee – SITAR
“……My approach to music is very deep. I do not compromise. Indian music is based on spiritualism and was practiced and learned to know the Supreme Truth. A musician must lift up the souls of the listeners and take them towards Space. This is the history of Indian music……. ”
Pandit Nikhil Banerjee (1931-1986) was amongst the finest sitarists to emerge on the classical music platform in the post-independence era. He entered the profession at a time when vocal music ruled the scene, and formidable musicians like Ustad Vilayat Khan, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, and Pandit Ravi Shankar were shaping a market for instrumental music. Under such daunting conditions, he created a niche for himself in the musical culture on the strength of his originality and musicianship.
Recognition came late, but it came. When he died at the age of 55, he had been decorated with a Padmashri, a Padma Bhushan, and a Sangeet Natak Academy Award. He had, by then, cultivated a sizeable constituency in the US. Sadly enough, India discovered him after he acquired a cult-like following in the US. With Vilayat Khan and Ravi Shankar polarizing the stylistic spectrum, the domestic musical culture took time to accept a third option. Fortunately, Indian recording companies had, all along, remained interested in him, thus facilitating his re-discovery. Nikhil Bannerjee has thus become larger in his death than he was in life.
Childhood and grooming Indian musician Abhijit Banerjee started learning tabla at a very young age from Sri Tushar Kanti Bose, later from Sri Manik Pal and finally came under the tutelage of Pandit Gyan Prakash Ghosh. As a child he won many Music competitions of national repute. Besides tabla he had his training in vocal music and in violin. Abhijit is now a regular performer at all the major music conferences all over India and overseas.Besides accompanying all the major artistes of India, both in North Indian and South Indian traditions, he has presented himself as a solo performer in many music conferences in India and Abroad. He has toured extensively all over the world and also associated himself with Jazz world and performed with some Jazz musicians and groups in New York. Abhijit has conducted many seminars on Indian Classical Music at Universities in U.S.A., Japan, England and Spain. Abhijit has recorded many CDs with many reputed companies accompanying almost all the major artists in Indian Classical Music today; as well as many well-known Jazz musicians. He has also recorded a tabla solo CD, which is now available from Magnasound and Peshkar CD. Abhijit has composed music for TV serials and short films of which The Trails– a film on Calcutta- got the National Award and is invited in the film festivals in Amsterdam and Munich. Abhijit had the privilege of representing India in the World Festival of Music held in Granada , Spain. In his academic life he is a graduate in English and post graduate in Journalism.
