TDP picks Masthan Rao, Sana Satish for Rajya Sabha

Amaravati, Dec 9 2024-

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has announced Beedha Masthan Rao and Sana Satish as its candidates for bye-elections to Rajya Sabha from Andhra Pradesh.

TDP president and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu cleared the names of Masthan Rao and Satish, a day before the nominations are to end for December 20 bye-elections to three seats.

The TDP has left one seat to its ally BJP, which has decided to field R. Krishnaiah, a backward-class leader who hails from Telangana.

The vacancies were caused by the recent resignations of Mopidevi Venkataramana Rao, Masthan Rao Yadav and Krishnaiah, all of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP).

While Mopidevi and Matshan Rao joined the TDP after resigning from the YSRCP in August, Krishnaiah announced that he would work to strengthen the backward class movement.

Mopidevi had his term up to June 21, 2026, while the term of the other two was to end on June 21, 2028.

Masthan Rao, an industrialist and Krishnaiah will return to Rajya Sabha while Satish, a businessman-turned-politician, will be making his debut as the MP.

Mastan Rao quit TDP to join YSRCP in 2019, a few months after YSRCP stormed to power. In 2022, Jagan Mohan Reddy rewarded Mastan Rao with the Rajya Sabha seat

Mastan Rao was elected MLA on the TDP ticket from Kavali in 2009 but lost the election in 2014. He contested unsuccessfully from Nellore Lok Sabha constituency on a TDP ticket in 2019.

The election of all three candidates of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) headed by TDP is likely to be unanimous going by its strength in the 175-member Assembly. The TDP has 135 members while its allies Jana Sena and BJP have 21 and 8 seats respectively.

The YSRCP, which lost power to the NDA in the elections held in May, has only 11 MLAs.

With the election of Masthan Rao and Satish, the TDP will re-enter the upper house of the Parliament.

  • Mopidevi showed undue haste in pushing Vanpic deal: Ex-CS

HYDERABAD: Former chief secretary A Raghottama Rao told the CBI, investigating the Jagan assets case, that Mopidevi Venkata Ramana, the then minister for infrastructure, investments and ports, took more than keen interest in the Vadarevu and Nizampatnam Ports and Industrial Corridor (Vanpic) project. The CBI has recorded the former chief secretary's statement as a witness in the case.
According to Raghottama, presently chairman of AP Electricity Regulatory Commission, Mopidevi signed the Vanpic file on March 11, 2008, and entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Vanpic representatives the same day and obtained the approval of the then chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy the following day for the deal. Going a step further, Mopidevi had made the following notings on the file: "For the purpose of viability of the projection, no need to modify Article 2 of the MoU. Discussed with principal secretary to CM. We may sign the MoU today and send the file (to CM) for post facto approval", the former CS said. The CM issued post facto approval on March 12, 2008, he said.
Raghottama's statement also made it clear that the process that was followed in the Vanpic episode regarding the alienation of assigned land to Vanpic Projects Pvt Ltd, a family venture of Nimmagadda Prasad, the kingpin in the case, was totally in contravention of the provisions of Assigned Lands (prohibition of transfer) Act of 1977. Even if assigned land is resumed from the assignees for allotting them to a public purpose, the resumption and the payment of ex gratia should be done by the government and not by a private party, Raghottama said. In the Vanpic case, payments were directly made by Vanpic to assignees. This cannot be done even if the assignees voluntarily relinquish their land for ex gratia, he said. The former CS also told the CBI in his deposition that if the minister or authorities want to ef

Mopidevi rewarded for loyalty to the YSR family

Rising from a humble background, Mopidevi Venkata Ramana Rao, 63, has created history by becoming the first politician from the fishermen community in the State to step into the hallowed portals of the Rajya Sabha.

A native of Nizampatnam village, Mr. Ramana Rao is the Minister for Marketing, Fisheries and Animal Husbandry in the YSRCP government. Even though he suffered defeat at the hands of Anagani Satya Prasad (TDP) from the Repalle Assembly constituency, Mr. Ramana was rewarded for his unflinching loyalty to the YSR family and made a Minister after being nominated to the Legislative Council in June 2019.

His entry into mainstream politics was a surprise, and as a 20-year-old graduate from Andhra Loyola College, Vijayawada, Mr. Ramana Rao found himself standing in direct elections to the Mandal Praja Parishad in 1987. It was former MLC Singam Basavapunnaiah who spotted him and recommended him as a candidate for the Congress in Assembly elections from the Kuchinapudi constituency in 1989. Even though he lost in two successive elections to Epuri Seetharavamma (TDP), Mr. Ramana Rao did not lose hope and won a landslide victory in 2004. In 2007, he was made a Minister for Ports and Infrastructure in the YSR Cabinet.

    Thanks Jagan

But soon after the death of YSR in September 2009, Mr. Ramana Rao found himself embroiled in a series of controversies. Named as an co-accused by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the Vanpic case, Mr. Ramana Rao was arrested and was lodged in central jail for over a year. Ill-health dogged him and he was frequently hospitalised during his remand.

“I thank Chief Minister Y.S Jagan Mohan Reddy for giving me the opportunity and this is certainly the most memorable moment in my political career,” he said.
