UNIVISION’s WXTV/Ch. 41 this week will launch the first-ever Spanish-language weekend newscasts. Starting Saturday, the station will air “Noticias 41,” its local newscasts at 6 p.

m. and 11 p.

m. It’ll do the same on Sundays.
In conjunction with the new newscasts, Ch. 41 has hired four new staffers. Adhemar Montagne and Arly Alfaro will anchor the newscasts, Sol Sostre will handle the weather and Salvador Cruz will provide sportscasts.
Montagne and Cruz are returning to the station after a few years away. Montagne started there in 1991 before moving on to positions around the country and Los Angeles. Cruz, the long-time voice of Ch. 41, has spent the past seven years as a weekday morning sportscaster on WADO radio (1280 AM).
Word of the new newscasts a 40% increase in the station’s news offerings comes as it marks its 30th year on the air. Ch. 41 launched at noon on Aug. 4, 1968.
The station is having a banner year so far, with record Nielsen Media Research ratings coming during the May sweeps, a key ratings period used by local stations to set future advertising rates.
It’s ratings growth has continued into the summer, challenging English-speaking stations for viewers in key local time periods.
