His Excellency Teppo Tauriainen, Swedish Ambassador to Canada; and The Honourable Linda Reid, MLA for Richmond East and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. Hey there, time traveller! FAIRMONT IN THE WOODS — Hustling in from the blustery storm Wednesday night, 150 guests arrived at the Fairmont Winnipeg hotel’s Kitchen Party and soon found themselves at a “campfire in the woods.” They had transformed the kitchen and party space into a Canadian camping scene with electronics throwing white birch trees on the wall space and bags of leaves saved since October for a crunchy forest floor. Guests got a kick out of making s’mores around a campfire with an open bar to one side. General manager Michael Pye announced upcoming renovations to the local Fairmont to all the Winnipeg movers and shakers who throw events gathered there. The hotel went all out, showing off what they could do. For instance, the hunting lodge was set up with trees in a stalled elevator with special whiskeys available to sip. To get from the party room to the kitchen, guests in barbecue aprons ducked down a tunnel where chef Jeremy Langemann and staff were cooking pan-fried pickerel. They also served up big, fat camp-style meatballs, crusted chicken and summer salads in a REAL boat-full of ice. “It’s my boat!” laughed Events By Emma decorator Emma Singh, who dreamed up these touches. Another nook in the kitchen served “everything on sticks” including hotdogs that looked like bulrushes ready to explode. Stuart Murray, the grand fromage of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, stopped by to clown with head honcho Pye, hotel party planner Eric Schon and food and beverage manager Grace Hicks. Spotted: Kelly and Bonny Neal of MGEU and Jacques Lavergne, who last week moved from the Fairmont’s sales department to the business end of the new museum at The Forks.
