FARMVILLE, Va. (CBS/AP) Was music behind the murders of four people in a small, rural Virginia college town?
It's a question that hovered over memorial services Saturday for two of the four victims who were beaten to death in Farmville, Va. Sept. 18. Emma Niederbrock, 16, was remembered as a rebellious girl who dabbled in the occult and obsessed about macabre music but also listened to the Backstreet Boys and played soccer.
Niederbrock, her mother, Longwood University professor Debra Kelley, 53, her father, Presbyterian minister Mark Niederbrock, 50, and her friend, Melanie Wells, 18, of Inwood, W.Va., were all found bludgeoned to death in Kelley and Emma Niederbrock's home.
Emma's boyfriend, aspiring horrorcore rapper Richard "Syko Sam" McCroskey, 20, of Castro Valley, Calif., has been charged in Mark Niederbrock's death. Authorities expect to charge him in the other deaths soon.
Emma, Wells and accused killer McCroskey were brought together through an online community that idolizes horrorcore music, which sets lyrics of murder, mutilation and decomposing bodies to hip-hop beats. Kelley and Mark Niederbrock took the three to a horrorcore music festival in Michigan Sept. 12.
The Rev. Sylvia S. Meadows did not blame the music for what happened, nor did she mention McCroskey or the songs he recorded and posted online under the name Syko Sam that bragged about the thrill of killing. But she did talk about the power music can have, from the relaxing sounds of nature to the rousing "Rocky" theme song.

"Music has a way of affecting the way you think, the way you feel," she said, directing many of her comments to about two dozen young people who attended the memorial service at Farmville United Methodist Church. Many scribbled messages to Emma on a skateboard or soccer b wow, this fat kid managed to kill someone? oh well, he rampaged because of heartbroken relationship. probably when they got together for first time, gf was disappointed by him. never understimate the power of love. more emo than "demonic", actually. I don't care about the guy himself, fuck him. But the songs are not that bad This music blows so bad. Even forgetting that he's fat, retarded, and a convicted murderer...judging him on his music alone...he sucks. Kelley, their daughter Emma Niederbrock and friend Melanie Wells. Emma Niederbrock shared an online friendship with Richard Samuel McCroskey, a troubled aspiring rapper who travelled from California. Together, Emma, McCroskey, Emma's parents and Wells attended a horrorcore concert the week before. When Wells' mother could not locate her daughter, she alerted police, who discovered the murders. McCroskey, 20 years old, was subsequently arrested, convicted of the murders and sentenced to life in prison. As of 2020, he is serving his sentence at Wallens Ridge State Prison in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. The murders took place at Dr. Debra Kelley's home, where Kelley lived with her daughter Emma Niederbrock. The bodies were found just after 3:00 p.m. on September 18, 2009, the victims having been bludgeoned to death with a hammer and maul. Three bodies were found in a downstairs bedroom and one in a room upstairs. According to police, Emma's parents, Debra Kelley and Mark Niederbrock, had taken her and her friends Melanie Wells and Richard McCroskey to a horrorcore concert, the Strictly for the Wicked Festival, in Southgate, Michigan days before the killings. Prince Edward County Commonwealth's Attorney James Ennis said McCroskey's anger over his failing relationship with Emma and text messages she had sent while they were in Michigan led to the killings. After the four returned to Virginia, McCroskey became increasingly distraught about the relationship, as he had an expectation that he and Emma were seeing each other Syko Sam
