Ilaiyaraaja (born Gnanathesigan) is an Indian musician, composer, arranger, conductor, orchestrator, multi-instrumentalist, lyricist and playback singer popular for his works in Indian cinema, predominately in Tamil, in addition to Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi films. Regarded as one of the most prolific composers, in a career spanning over forty-eight years, he has composed over 7,000 songs and provided film scores for over 1,500+ films, apart from performing in over 20,000 concerts. He is nicknamed "Isaignani" (the musical sage) and is often referred to as "Maestro", the title conferred to him by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London.
Ilaiyaraaja was also one of the first Indian film composers to use Western classical music harmonies and string arrangements in Indian film music, and the first South Asian to compose a full symphony. In 1986, he became the first Indian composer to record a soundtrack with computer for the film Vikram. He also composed Thiruvasagam in Symphony (2006), the first Indian oratorio.
In 2013, when CNN-IBN conducted a poll to commemorate 100 years of Indian cinema, he secured 49% of the vote and was adjudged the country's greatest music composer. In 2014, the American world cinema portal "Taste of Cinema" placed him at 9th position in its list of 25 greatest film composers in the history of cinema. He is the only Indian on the list, appearing alongside Ennio Morricone, John Williams, and Jerry Goldsmith.
Ilaiyaraaja received several awards for his works throughout his career. In 2012, for his creative and experimental works in the field of music, he received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the highest Indian recognition given to people in the field of performing arts. Handel Manuel was a pianist, organist, composer, chorus director, music teacher, and producer of children’s radio programs. He was station director for the Western music program at All India Radio, Madras. He worked on contract for All India Radio, serving as the Director of Western music programs. Handel Manuel was Music Director of Madras Musical Society for about 40 years; the founder and Musical Director of the Madras Philharmonic and Choral Society, and a life member of the Royal School of Church Music, England.
His birth and background
Handel Manuel was born in Tuticorin on April 26, 1918. He was the oldest of four children. His father, Dr. G. Manuel, had a hobby repairing musical instruments. So the house had many musical instruments lying around. Surender Schaffter, his brother, learned to play the cello, piano, pipe organ with pedals, clarinet, flute, cello, recorder, and double bass. In contrast, Handel learned to play the piano and the pipe organ. Dr. Manuel named his eldest son Handel after the German composer George Fredric Handel. The name was not wasted on him, and Handel Manuel became one of the best Western classical musicians that Madras has seen.

The founding of the MMA in 1893 was in an attempt to capitalize on an existing Western musical tradition in Madras. By the middle of the nineteenth century, regular Western music performances were taking place in major cities across India, expanding from churches, military, and home settings to public performances at theaters and opera houses, like the Museum Theatre in Madras. Later, MMA drew more and more upon Indian members and audiences to continue promoting and performing Western music.

She sang the song "Thayya Thayya" in the 1998 Mani Ratnam film Uyire, which was composed by A. R. Rahman. Her first successful Telugu album, Chikpak Chikbhum, which was released in Chennai, sold ten lakh copies. The songs were composed by RajāKoti, under whom A. R. Rahman was assisted. She has appeared as a judge on the Malayalam language music competition program Idea Star Singer. She is a judge in Star Singer 2 (Kannada), airing on Asianet Suvarna from 7-8 pm on weekdays.
