Veerappan: End of three decades of terror

COIMBATORE: Nearly three decades reign of terror unleashed by dreaded sandalwood smuggler Veerappan in the sprawling 6,000 sq km thick forests of the Western Ghats came to an end on Monday with the bandit being shot dead by the Special Task Force of Tamil Nadu police.
Veerappan carried crores of rupees as rewards on his head, probably the highest in the country.
The brigand has killed more than 150 people, including senior police and forest officials, and 2,000 elephants and ruled the entire forest belt bordering the three states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala.
Defying twenty years of hunt by police, the military and Special Task Force set up by Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, Veerappan operated with a ''possessive vengence'' to teach lessons to the government and forces.
Coming out successful in every operation and making the government bow to his demands, the dacoit''s end must be a great relief and victory to the STF of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
Tracing history, Veerappan''s mysterious escape from the Boodipada forest guest house in Karnataka in 1986 proved a turning point for both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu governments.
Hailing from Gopinatham village in Kollegal taluk of Karnataka, Veerappan shot to fame at the age of 18 with his shooting abilities and joined a gang of poachers and took over the reins after "voluntary retirement" of the gang leader.
Veerappan made money killing tuskers for ivory and extended his activities in the field of sandalwood smuggling.
The government came to know of his involvement only in the mid-eighties, when his gang kidnapped a Tamil Nadu forest officer and axed him to death in 1987.
Six months after the incident, the Veerappan gang kidnapped and butchered some members of a rival gang. From then on, terror reigned in the entire belt with the gang, comprising of about 40 members, indulging in killing and kidnapping.
    In August 1989, the gan
