  • Emmanuel Charles McCarthy, born October
  • Today’s podcastis about St. Edith Stein and the miracle that led to her canonization on Oct. 11, 1998. That miracle happened back in 1987 to the daughter of our frequent guest on the podcast, Fr. Emmanuel Charles McCarthy. Twenty-one years ago today, Fr. McCarthy con-celebrated the canonization Mass of Edith Stein in Rome with Pope Saint John Paul II (pictured below). I am excited to share this story of a miracle, which is always a story of hope. Moreover, my wish is that this story has the same affect on you that it did on me: It prompted me to take another look at Fr. McCarthy’s life and his life’s work, and to take more seriously that message of nonviolent love of friends and enemies which he has spent his life trying to communicate to the Church.

In an interview with EWTNabout her book Edith Stein: A Spiritual Portrait, author Diane Marie Tartlet says: “[Edith Stein’s] whole life was an adventure and she realized that our life of the faith is not boring. If we really have surrendered ourself to God, every day becomes one of surprises, one where we are realizing God’s presence in others in our lives in various situations. There are no coincidences.

The story of the miracle of Edith Stein illustrates in a vivid and compelling way these truths about “the life of the faith,” specifically the life of faith of Emmanuel McCarthy. Listen to the podcast today and you will understand that the story of the miracle of Edith Stein begins years if not decades before the medical anomaly of 1987. You will walk away believing that, indeed, “there are no coincidences.” The connection between Fr. McCarthy and Edith Stein was no doubt planned, encouraged, and inspired by God, and what happened to two-year-old Theresa Benedicta McCarthy in March of 1987 was nothing less than a kind of pinnacle in, or culmination of, the life of the faith that her father had lived: The miracle seems to have been linke

    COURSE DESCRIPTION

Over the course of 40 days, participants will read the first book in Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games while listening to the first eight presentations in Fr. Emmanuel McCarthy's world-renowned audio retreat Behold the Lamb. Participants will be invited to seriously ponder Jesus's Way of nonviolent love of friends and enemies. Participants will walk away with a better appreciation for the perennial problem of violence in human society and a deeper, more profound understanding of Jesus's new commandment: "love one another as I have loved you" (John 13:34). The goal of this retreat will be to educate the conscience, which the Catechism of the Catholic Church says "is a lifelong task" (CCC 1784). Through this we hope to grow in the virtues of Faith, Hope, and Love this Easter season, and beyond.

Ideally, parents would do this retreat alongside their teens, but "solo" teens are welcome to enroll as are individual adults!

Emmanuel Charles McCarthy taught at the University of Notre Dame where he founded and was the original Director of The Program for the Study and Practice of Nonviolent Conflict Resolution. He was also co-founder of Pax Christi-USA, along with Dorothy Day, Gordon Zahn, Eileen Egan, Bishop Carrol Dozier, Bishop Thomas Gumbletonand others . For twenty-five years he served as Spiritual Director and/or Rector of St. Gregory the Theologian Byzantine-Melkite Catholic Seminary. In 1981, he co-founded The Center on Conscience and War in Cambridge MA with John Leary and Gordon Zahn. For over fifty years he has directed retreats and spoken at conferences throughout the world on the issue of the relationship of faith and violence and the Nonviolent Jesus of the Gospels and His Way of Nonviolent Love of friends and enemies.

In 1983 he began The Annual Forty Day Fast for the Truth of Gospel Nonviolence, July 1 to August 9, whose purpose is to pray to the Father in the name of Jesus to bestow on the Churches of Christianity whatever extraordinary graces are needed so that they, individually and collectively, begin to teach and live in relation to the phenomena of violence and enmity what Jesus taught and lived in relation to violence and enmity. This yearly time of prayer and fasting has continued uninterrupted to this very year with people from across the planet having participated in it over the decades.

In 1990 he initiated the Annual July 16 Twenty-Four Hours Day of Prayer for Forgiveness and Protection with Our Lady of Mount Carmel at Trinity Site in the New Mexico desert. July 16 is the feast day of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, as well as, the day in 1945 when the first atomic bomb was detonated at Trinity Site. This yearly time of prayer also has continued uninterrupted to this very year.
