Hands Down, our favorite is our "Noel Calendar." My sister-in-law gave this to us Sarala's first Christmas, and it has been our favorite since then. It is great for little kids because the way you tell a part of the Christmas story each day and add to it, they really do learn the Christmas story and the Gospel in doing it. Since our family has been doing it year after year for a while now, we have it all memorized, and have even been able to share it on the spot with our neighbors, at our church in India, and we have the birth of Jesus story quite tucked away. I cannot recommend this enough.
Here are a few videos from 2007 and 2008 when our kids were so little reading through the calendar.
The calendar is not available at Desiring God anymore, but you can make your own. Here is a blogpost with a pattern of how a lady made one. Another: Here is a picture I found last year of another one a lady made--it is SO cute (her tutorial is no longer available). You could also look at Noel Piper's book . Even if you don't make it, I can share with you the story, and you could use it. It also has a picture on it if you want to make your own. Just send me an email.
Another tradition that we do every year is the Jesse Tree. I love this because it takes you through scripture from Creation to Christ. There are so many different versions out there. I recommend you research and find one that is best for you. You can even just print off a list of scheduled readings, and you do not have to purchase anything. Here is a great resource with a scripture list and even little pictures so you can make your own ornaments if you want to get started for this year. Here is another one that has the scripture passages listed out for reading daily. We did free lists for many years. We have done different versions, books, and we did finally purchase ornaments a few years ago. There are so many b
When I read Treasuring God in Our Traditions for the first time 8 years ago, I was intrigued by the Advent Calendar that Noel Piper mentions in the book. After a few short clicks at the Desiring God website, I had an Advent Calendar ordered and heading straight to my house. Two months later was Christmas, and we used it that first year. Our son was 5 1/s months old. He had no idea what we were doing or saying, but we did it anyway. Twelve months later we did it again; he enjoyed velcro-ing the item each night. In 2 months, we will go through the same Advent Calendar again for an 8th year. My boys are giddy when I get out the cardboard box each year. I love traditions.
Sadly, the Advent Calendar mentioned in Treasuring God in Our Traditions is no longer for sale from Desiring God. It is one of the two Advent Calendars that we use each year. When I was writing about the Advent Calendar last year, I happily discovered Heart Felt Truths (thank you, Google!). On her website you can download FREE patterns to MAKE THIS ADVENT CALENDAR! Wahoo!! Last year, I had several Suzanne Shares readers make their own Advent Calendars using the FREE patterns, and they were ADORABLE! I loved seeing the pictures of the Advent Calendars and their cute kiddos using them! 🙂
Over the past year, I have gotten to know Whitney, the gifted, amazing seamstress and creator behind Heart Felt Truths. She gave me the wonderful opportunity of reviewing her Easter Banner, and I just love, love, love her stuff! If making your own Noel Piper Advent Calendar (as I like to call it) using Heart Felt Truths FREE patterns sounds intimidating, the GREAT news is that Whitney sells DIY Kits for $16 at her ETSY Shop. Or, you can buy a completed set for $45. Whitney has graciously offered Suzanne Shares readers a 10% COUPON CODE (YAY!! Thank you, Whitney!)

I love gearing up for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and I love traditions like th We are a people of promise. For centuries God prepared people for the coming of his Son, our only hope for life. At Christmas we celebrate the fulfillment of the promises God made—that he would make a way to draw near to him. Advent is what we call the season leading up to Christmas. It begins four Sundays before December 25, sometimes in the last weekend of November, sometimes on the first Sunday in December. First Peter 1:10-12 is a clear description of what we look back to during Advent. For four weeks, it’s as if we’re reenacting, remembering the thousands of years during which God’s people were anticipating and longing for the coming of God’s salvation, for Jesus. That’s what advent means—“coming.” Even God’s men who foretold the grace that was to come didn’t know “what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating” (1 Pet. 1:11). They were waiting, but they didn’t know what God’s salvation would look like. In fact, God revealed to them that they were not the ones who would see the sufferings and glory of God’s Christ. “They were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven” (1 Pet. 1:12). They were serving us. We Christians on this side of Jesus’ birth are a God-blessed, happy people because we know God’s plan. The centuries of waiting are over. We have the greatest reason to celebrate. Helps Christians understand and pass along biblical traditions to future generations by guiding readers to practically live out Christ-centered traditions and a Bible-saturated legacy. And yet we are still waiting. Our spiritual redemption came to us with the baby of Bethlehem. Nonetheless, as Romans 8 says, “we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies” (Rom. 8:23). There Ready to order? Head over to our Etsy Shop! The Heart Felt Truths Advent Calendar is a felt display that completes a nativity scene over the period of 25 days. As your family counts down to Christmas, a new piece will be added to the display that corresponds with part of a retelling of the Christmas story. As your children re-read the past portions of the story each day they will begin to memorize the story and the small passages of Scripture that are included in it. This calendar is very similar in concept to Noel Piper’s “Noel Calendar.” If you are familiar with the Noel Calendar, you will find the story is different and that the materials are obviously very different, but the concept is the same. All ages will enjoy this activity but it is especially great for establishing Christ-Centered Christmas traditions for Christian families with toddlers, preschoolers and young school age children. Below are the FREE patterns and instructions for designing your own felt Advent Calendar. If you are interested in ordering a felt advent calendar that has been completed or ordering a DIY Kit (complete with instructions, pre-sewn backdrop, patterns, and all necessary felt) , please visit our Etsy Shop to order.
